As the result of a successful auction, EIGHT scholarships will be awarded in 2011!!!

2011 Scholarship Program

A Scholarship Program was established in 1995 by the Herndon Swim League to help an HSL graduate defray a portion of their college expenses. In 1998 the Herndon Swim League expanded this program to choose two graduating senior swimmers to receive a cash award to be used at the colleges of their choice, and in 1999 it was decided to award up to six scholarships. This will continue in 2011 with the awarding of up to six EIGHT $500 scholarships.

Minimum Requirements are:

1. Member in good standing of any Herndon Swim League team, with at least one previous year on a league team.
2. A graduating member of the Class of 2011 from an area high school with a 2.0 grade point average or above.

The nomination can be prepared and submitted by the nominee or anyone who knows the nominee, but must be reviewed by the Team Representative. Please include the following information:

1. Name, address and telephone number of nominee.
2. HSL team affiliation(s) and year(s).
3. HSL accomplishments (Team awards, All-Stars, etc.)
4. Other swim team activities (coaching, event planning, etc.)
5. Academic achievements (include high school(s) attended and grade point average).
6. Other school-related achievements.
7. College or other school nominee will attend.
8. Community activities.
9. Any other relevant information.
10. A Personal Statement by the nominee concerning why they should be selected for the scholarship. Include information on the importance of swimming to you and how it has affected or influenced your life.
11. Signature of the nominee.
12. A signed Checklist from the Team Representative.
13. Attach one brief letter of recommendation from a coach, teacher, employer, etc. (May not be from a parent or any other relative.)

Criteria to be used by the League in selecting the recipients: The primary consideration will be the nominee's dedication and contributions to their swim team over the years. Other items to be considered, in the following order, are school accomplishments, community service, academics and swimming accomplishments.

These criteria will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee which will make the final decision. The nomination package must be submitted to the address below to arrive not later than July 2, 2011 so that selections can be made and announced at the HSL All-League Meets on July 23, 2011.
